US Envoy: NATO risks "very real" weapons deficit as result of Ukraine

(MENAFN) Almost all NATO nations' weapons and ammunition inventories have been reduced as a result of the amount of armoury delivered to Ukraine, according to US Ambassador to NATO Julianne Smith on Tuesday. The US, NATO, and the EU are all encouraging the Western military sector to increase production to make up for the gap.

Smith offered the example of Estonia, which has provided huge help to Ukraine but is now experiencing "some very genuine gaps," during an event held by the CSIS research group.

The US permanent spokesperson to NATO stated, “They are not alone. We see that across the alliance writ large.”

While the "contact group" for Ukraine is entrusted with coordinating deliveries to Kiev, NATO has tasked the Conference of National Armaments Directors (CNAD) with dealing with the issue of "declining stocks across the alliance," according to Smith. In the meanwhile, the EU has started a second program geared specifically at the military industry.

"There are a lot of flowers growing here," Smith told CSIS, adding that the objective is to discover "connective tissue" so that the EU, NATO, and the US work together rather than against each other. According to Smith, all of these measures are geared at convincing the Western military industry to boost production.
